Karsten (photographer) on the project's meaning: "The River Maiden", part of my new line of work, "Forgotten Folklore", explores the identity and perception of Jamaican folklore characters. The River Maiden is a sacred yet feared guardian of the water, rarely interacting with the surface world. Growing up, my mother would tell me to look for a mermaid while crossing Flat Bridge in Jamaica. Though I never saw one, these stories shaped part of my identity, and this project honors those memories.”
