La Calaca follows mezzo-soprano Rosario Armas and pianist Ahmed Alom through Canciones de la Muerte, a song cycle by Julián De La Chica inspired by verses found in Portugal’s Capela dos Ossos. Through music and performance, the film confronts the inevitability of death and the ancient reminder at the heart of the chapel: those who came before us await those who are still alive.
