Now, doors and gates of many of these glorious homes are flung asunder, or opened carefully, rather, under the watchful eyes of National Trust volunteers who’ll take your twenty pounds at the kiosk – upkeep, you understand – for a walk around the lake to see the swans and the mallards, and then let’s stop at the cafe, shall we? They have cream tea with scones and strawberries on Saturdays.
