What's your go-to everyday camera setup?
John Sypal has spent nearly two decades documenting the cameras of photographers he meets on the streets of Tokyo.
An Archive Built One Encounter at a Time
For almost 20 years, Sypal has approached strangers carrying cameras through Tokyo and asked to photograph their gear. No posed studio shots, no product photography, just the cameras people actually reach for day to day, slung over a shoulder or held mid-stride. The project, known as Tokyo Camera Style, has turned into a running document of how photographers really work, straps worn in, cases scuffed, film and digital sitting side by side.
Gear as a Kind of Portrait
What makes the archive compelling isn't the cameras themselves, it's what they say about the people carrying them. A worn rangefinder tells a different story than a mint-condition digital body. Sypal's images work like portraits without faces, letting the equipment speak to habit, taste, and years of use.
