Cass builds his images by layering hundreds of frames from the same scene, usually a basketball game, a track meet, a swim meet, until the field is filled with players and moments that never actually shared the same second. The result doesn't look staged so much as remembered, every jump, pass, and stray ball occupying the same fragile space at once.

His images feel less like photographs than recollections, where everything that happened occupies the same fragile space. As Cass once said: "It's not really about sports. It's about how funny and strange life is, being a person moving on the surface of the Earth."
