You've seen his work. You just didn't know his name.

Michael Doret designed the New York Knicks logo in 1992. More than three decades later, it's still at center court.

A Brooklyn Education

Doret is a Brooklyn kid, raised on Coney Island, Times Square, neon signs, and visual chaos. The city taught him typography before any classroom did, all that competing signage and lettering doubling as an unofficial design education.

From Sketch to Icon

In 1991, the NBA called. The Knicks needed a new logo. It started with sketches, dozens of variations built around the team name and a basketball, each one testing a different angle on the same idea. One version even included the Empire State Building. The NBA passed on it. Six months later, the Knicks had a logo they'd keep for decades.

Of the final result, Doret said: "It's very meaningful to me. The acceptance by New York makes me very proud."

A Career Beyond the Court

Today, Doret's work can be found everywhere: KISS albums, Disney films, TIME Magazine covers. The Knicks logo is just one entry in a career that's shaped the visual language of album art, movie titles, and magazine journalism alike.

Still at Center Court

1991 to 2026. Still at center court. More than three decades later, the logo Doret sketched by hand remains one of the most recognizable marks in sports, even if most fans wearing it courtside have never heard his name.
