Liim Lasalle's "R.I.P Peace" wears its influences on its sleeve. The video is heavily inspired by Blood Orange's "Champagne Coast," directed by Haley Wollens, and instead of burying that reference, Lasalle built the whole project around it as a tribute to internet-era music videos.
We caught up with him about the inspiration, the personal details hidden throughout the video, and why he'd rather name his influences outright.
What stuck out about "Champagne Coast" the first time you watched it?
"I saw the 'Champagne Coast' maybe 2-3 years ago, and ever since I'd seen it I wanted to recreate it in some capacity. It just reminded me of computer games I played as a kid."
Why revisit this visual style now?
"I think my purpose in music is always to bring two worlds I love together. And the idea to pay homage to both Blood Orange & Lite Feet culture has been on my mind for a long time!"
Did you place any personal references in the video?
"Almost everything in the video is intentional. You can find old photos of my father who passed away, childhood photos, the sunflowers represent me throughout, the furniture belongs to friends and me, and much more."
What was the animation process like?
"The animation style didn't take long at all as we had the most talented 9oodkid on the edit. I sent in a bunch of personal photos for the render and he put em together."
Why openly shout out your inspirations instead of hiding them?
"I shout out my inspirations for a simple reason and it's that I have a world of respect for the original. Fuck the gatekeepin tbh."
What do you miss about music videos from the past?
"I miss how you could really see an artist's imagination and world in it. One of my favorites from the 2010s is Lupe's 'Kick Push' video. I grew up skating so that video and song was really an inspiration for me as a youngin."
