Christopher Nolan has been shooting on IMAX since 2008's The Dark Knight. For decades, the format delivered some of cinema's most breathtaking images. Capturing live dialogue on top of that? That was always the hard part.

For The Odyssey, Nolan set out to fix it.

The Noise Problem

Traditional IMAX cameras are incredibly loud, loud enough that recording live dialogue on set has never really been practical. Productions have worked around it for years, leaning on ADR instead of capturing performances live.

Working with Nolan, IMAX engineered a new camera system to solve it: the Keighley. The system uses a custom soundproof housing, known as a blimp, to dramatically cut camera noise, finally making sync sound possible on an IMAX shoot.

A New Problem: Eye Contact

The fix came with a tradeoff. The soundproof housing made the camera so large that actors struggled to maintain eye contact around it.

Nolan's crew solved it with mirrors. A custom mirror system lets actors hold natural eye contact even with the camera's bulk sitting between them, preserving the intimacy IMAX close-ups depend on.

Named After IMAX's Own Pioneers

The camera is named after David and Patricia Keighley, longtime IMAX pioneers whose work shaped the format for decades. It debuted on The Odyssey and marks a real turning point for IMAX filmmaking, giving directors a way to shoot dialogue-driven scenes at true IMAX scale for the first time.
